Therapies for Venous Conditions
Endovenous Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA)
We specialize in minimally invasive vein treatments
that provide lasting relief from varicose veins and chronic venous
insufficiency. One of the most advanced treatments we offer is Endovenous Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA),
a state-of-the-art procedure that effectively closes diseased veins,
improves circulation, and alleviates discomfort—all without the need for
surgery.
Sclerotherapy
is an advanced vein treatment that
involves injecting a specialized sclerosant solution into affected veins
under ultrasound guidance. This solution irritates and collapses the
vein walls, redirecting blood flow to healthier veins and allowing the
treated vein to be naturally absorbed by the body over time.
PICC Placement
Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) is a long, thin tube
inserted through a vein in the arm and threaded to a large vein near the
heart. PICCs are used for prolonged intravenous therapies.
A PICC line and other central lines allows multiple blood draws without repeated vein
punctures, and allows safe administration of IV drugs and feedings. The
ability to directly image the vessel that is to be accessed increases
patient safety, comfort and success rates.
Familiarity with all types of catheters allows the radiologist to
customize which access device would be the most appropriate.
Interventional radiologists routinely place catheters in patients who
have been labeled as having “no veins.”
Patients who have had many
catheters in the past (especially dialysis patients) may require unique
locations for new catheters such as through the liver, chest, or back.
Image guidance allows the interventional radiologist to do this safely.
Removal of Vein Clots
Deep
Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a serious condition where blood clots form in
the deep veins, typically in the legs. This condition can lead to
significant health issues if not treated promptly, including the risk of
a Pulmonary Embolism (PE), where a clot travels to the lungs, causing a
potentially life-threatening blockage.
Pulmonary Embolism
A pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot from the deep veins
travels to the lungs, obstructing blood flow. Symptoms include sudden
shortness of breath, chest pain, and coughing up blood. Immediate
medical attention is crucial for managing PE and preventing severe
complications.
Thrombolysis / Thrombectomy
Thrombolysis involves dissolving blood clots using medication, while
Thrombectomy is a procedure to physically remove clots. These treatments
are essential for patients with severe DVT or PE, offering rapid relief
and preventing further complications. At VIR Chicago, we use advanced
imaging and techniques to perform these procedures safely and
effectively.
IVC Filter Placement / Retrieval
An Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) Filter is a device placed in the large
vein of the abdomen to prevent blood clots from traveling to the lungs.
This is particularly useful for patients who cannot take blood thinners.
The filter can be placed temporarily or permanently, depending on the
patient’s needs.
